Tori Kelly's “Hiding Places" CD- Review & Giveaway!!

Our family is a musical family. My husband is on our church worship team and plays drums, piano, and bass guitar. Our oldest son plays trumpet. Our middle son plays the drums. You can say, music is a huge part of our lives. So when I get a chance to listen to something new, I get extremely excited.

I had heard of Tori Kelly and I immediately wanted to listen to her music. And let’s just say I was NOT disappointed! If you are looking for a fresh new gospel sound, look no further! Tori Kelly has teamed up with Kirk Franklin to produce an amazing album. Tori has an incredibly soothing and soulful voice. This album has an R&B feel to it, and you can definitely relate to her heart and soul as you listen to her music. I really enjoyed listening to her new CD “Hiding Places”. Go out and get a copy today!

About Tori Kelly:

While working on the follow-up to her debut album Unbreakable Smile—a 2015 release that premiered at #2 on the Billboard 200—Tori Kelly felt compelled to include a track that honored her lifelong passion for gospel music. With the help of her manager, Scooter Braun, the L.A.-based singer/songwriter soon connected with Kirk Franklin, a 12-time Grammy Award-winning gospel artist and one of Kelly’s musical idols. “I flew to Dallas and Kirk showed me a few songs he’d written, and I fell in love with all of them,” says Kelly, a 2016 Grammy Award nominee for Best New Artist. “Next thing you know, one song turned into us doing a whole album together. It just took on a life of its own.”

With its R&B-infused, deeply melodic take on classic gospel, Hiding Place offers up what Franklin refers to as “hope-pop”—a classification that fully resonates with Kelly. “One of the things I want for this album is for people to feel uplifted and encouraged when they listen,” she says. “I want them to know that, no matter what they’re going through, there’s a God who loves them so much and so unconditionally, and there’s always a reason to feel hope. That’s what I really believe in, and I want everyone out there to hear my heart.”

As Kelly explains, the title to Hiding Place draws inspiration from a line in one of her favorite psalms (“You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance”). “That always stuck with me: this idea of God being a place of safety, a place where you can hide from all the crazy things that this world can throw at us,” she notes. Produced by Franklin, Hiding Place unfolds with a lush yet simply adorned sound beautifully suited to Kelly’s incomparable voice. “I’ve worked with Mary J. Blige, Bono, Yolanda Adams, and I’ve never seen anyone that’s a monster behind the microphone like Tori Kelly,” says Franklin. “She’d nail one song in three takes, and all those takes were amazing. It set the bar higher for my whole career.”

While half of the songs on Hiding Place were penned solely by Franklin, the remaining tracks came from a collaboration between him and Kelly—the first time that Franklin’s ever co-written in a decades-long career that’s seen his songs performed by legends like Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston. (“It blew me away that she wanted us to co-write, because she’s a phenomenal songwriter and could’ve easily done it herself,” Franklin says.) And at Franklin’s urging, Hiding Place was mostly recorded at his studio just outside Dallas. “The most important thing to me was that if Tori wanted to do a gospel album—a real, authentic, heart-throbbing gospel album—she’d have to come to the South,” he says. “Then she showed up at my studio with no entourage, no handlers—just Tori and her guitar, standing at my front door.”

With its sonic palette gracefully rooted in live instrumentation, Hiding Place first reveals its unbridled spirit on the album-opening “Masterpiece” (featuring Houston-bred hip-hop artist Lecrae)—a joyfully uptempo track that instantly sweeps the listener into a more radiant state of mind. From there, Kelly delivers her slow-burning lead single “Help Us to Love,” whose breathtaking harmonies feature the famed HamilTones (official background vocalists for Grammy Award-winner Anthony Hamilton). Proving her versatility as an artist and musician, Hiding Place then shifts seamlessly from the silky groove and playful scat singing of “Sunday” to the sweetly ethereal soul of “Just As Sure” (a duet with chart-topping gospel star Jonathan McReynolds) to the quiet intensity of “Psalm 42.” “So many of the songs on this album are so intricate, I wanted a song that I could play completely stripped-down, just me and my guitar,” says Kelly of the tender piano ballad.

One of the most profound moments on Hiding Place, the hushed yet urgent ballad “Questions” finds Kelly tearfully examining the current state of the world (sample lyric: “What happens when the healing never comes?”). “It’s about trying to make sense of all the dark and heavy things that keep happening, sort of crying out to God and asking, ‘What’s going on? I don’t like what I see down here,’” says Kelly. Then, on the subtly determined “Never Alone,” Kelly recollects her own struggles (“I’ve cried many rivers/I’ve walked through some pain/Seen my world crumble”) and ultimately re-discovers comfort and peace through her faith. On “Soul’s Anthem,” Kelly closes out Hiding Place with an a cappella, full-choir-driven rendition of the beloved hymn “It Is Well.” Perhaps the most powerfully captivating track on the album, “Soul’s Anthem” also gave way to what Kelly considers a landmark moment in her musical career. “Before we started, Kirk said to me, ‘Don’t look at me or the choir, just look down and get into your own world,’” says Kelly, who recorded “Soul’s Anthem” at the iconic Capitol Studios. “So I sang it all the way through, and at one point there’s a part where the choir takes over. I looked up and saw all these incredible singers, and it finally hit me that this was really happening. You can’t hear it on the recording, but I’m crying at the end of the song.”

Looking back on the making of Hiding Place, Kelly still marvels at the experience. “I always thought I would do something like this, but I thought it would be much further down the line,” she says. “It’s been in my heart for some time, but the timing didn’t feel right until now. I didn’t think I’d get the chance to work with someone like Kirk just yet, and that people would be so excited and accepting.” And though the album marks a stylistic departure from her work in the pop world, a commitment to uncompromising artistry carries through all of Kelly’s music. “No matter what genre you’re working in, there should be a level of excellence, and Tori definitely brought that excellence to this album,” says Franklin. “A lot of artists out there will rely on Auto-Tune or studio tricks, but there’s no button you can push for emotion, and there’s no button for skill. Tori is excellent in everything she does, because she’s a real, pure artist.” As she gets ready to share Hiding Place with the world, Kelly hopes that it might give others the same sense of solace and joy she’s found in gospel in her entire life. And as the album’s creator, one of the most rewarding aspects of Hiding Place was embracing gospel’s boundless intensity, and pushing her vocal performance like never before. “With gospel music, you can’t sing without all your heart being in it,” says Kelly. “This album was an opportunity to not only express my faith and my love for God, but to do what I felt and never hold back. I could just be free and let the song take me over.”

Lies Moms Believe- Review and Giveaway!

By: Melissa Baker

Motherhood. It's tough. It's overwhelming. It's exhausting. Sometimes you feel like you aren't good enough. Or you aren't a good mom. The world tells you that you should parent a certain way, and if you don't you are a failure.  As we face our daily struggles in this motherhood journey, Satan can throw many lies at us. And we can start to believe them. It's during these times that we need to seek God and read what the Bible tells us to be true. We have to combat those lies that the enemy so carefully puts in our heads. In Rebekah Hargraves book "Lies Moms Believe", she tackles 32 of the most common lies that moms begin to believe. From believing "I have to be a perfect mom", to "mothering is not important", she gets to the bottom of these lies and exposes them as the lies they are according to the Gospel. The book is broken down into five areas that Satan likes to attack and lie to us about in our mothering. It touches on lies about the work of motherhood, lies about how God views us as moms, lies about ourselves (which to me is a BIG one), lies about our children and lies about our parenting choices. This book has really helped and has encouraged me in my mothering journey. I have three boys, and staying encouraged can be tough, especially when your little ones can be as stubborn as they come. But with the help of this book, I have more passion as a mother, a little more patience and definitely more joy than I had before. If you are in need of encouragement as a mother, or just a simple confidence boost, I would highly recommend this book!

There is also the "Lies Moms Believe: The Companion Bible Study" that goes along with the book and digs deeper into the Word of God to help us understand and apply everything we have read to our lives. It breaks down each lie from the book, and has the scriptures for us to read. There are a few study questions that are accompanied with each lie and a prayer at the end of each lie we study about. At the very end of each section, there is a "memorize the word" scripture that we are to memorize, which will help us combat those lies when Satan tries to taunt us. This would be perfect for a Bible study at church with several other moms, or is just as great studying on your own. I would highly recommend the book as well as the study guide to mothers of any stage, weather you have newborns or grown adult kids. There is encouragement and truth for every mother!

About the Book:

As moms, we have voices coming at us from all directions on a daily basis – voices from the culture, the church, the parenting “experts”, our own parents, and others. And you know what the real kicker is? The voices all vary in what they are telling us is true! As if this weren’t confusing enough, add to it the fact that we are daily bombarded by lies from our old enemy, Satan, as well, and we are left with an overwhelming cesspool of deception. But take heart, mama. There is good news! We are not left to our own devices in motherhood, desperately trying to sift through all the voices on our own. God, in His infinite mercy and grace, has provided us with unchanging truth in His Word that is able to combat each and every lie that could ever be thrown at us. We need only to study the Scriptures, seeking to “take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ”. That is the heart behind Lies Moms Believe. In this book, Rebekah seeks to show you once and for all that the Gospel is not simply Good News for your eternity. It is Good News for the here and now as well, and is relevant and applicable to each and every lie and struggle you face in motherhood. With warmth, transparency, and an unwavering passion for truth, Rebekah addresses 32 of the most common lies moms believe today about the importance of motherhood, children, the role of a mom, and more. Tackling such lies as: “I am to find my identity and ultimate fulfillment in motherhood”, “Mothering is unimportant work”, and “I have to be a perfect mom”, she shows how God’s Word applies to all the lies out there, whether practical or spiritual. You will come away inspired, encouraged, and motivated as never before to live out your days as a mother with passion, joy, purpose, and freedom. As Jesus told us in John 8:32, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Matthew West: All In CD Review and Giveaway!!

By: Melissa Baker

Matthew West is such an inspirational musician. Every song in this album seems to have bits and pieces of his testimony. He encourages the listeners to get out of their comfort zone and really live their lives. We can't just simply exist. Our lives should be lived to the fullest and that is exactly the message behind this album. The songs on this album really hit you in the heart. They are so relatable and touch you right where you are. Several of these songs really spoke to me and have given me the motivation to truly be "All In". God has made us to be more than just spectators sitting on the sidelines, watching our lives go by. In every area of our lives, we need to give it our all and fully be there. Through these songs, you will be inspired to be all that God has called you to be. So... are you "All In"?

About the album:
Matthew wrote his new album All In with the goal of encouraging himself and others to get up off the sidelines of their faith and really live it out – to go all in in your time with God, all in with your family, all in with your community, and all in battling your fears that may hold you back from becoming who God made you to be. Along that same theme, Matthew will be launching a 6-week All in Challenge on his social media starting 9/18, and each week Matthew will be challenging his fans to go all in in a different part of their lives. What does it look like when a heart that knows Jesus takes a step and holds nothing back? How can we go All In in the places that mean the most?

Patterns of Evidence- Exodus: DVD Giveaway!

By: Melissa Baker

I have recently had the privilege to view Patterns of Evidence- Exodus. The filmmaker traveled around Egypt and the middle east, looking and searching for hard, physical evidence that what the Bible says, is in fact true. I found it interesting how they showed many places that they went to gather evidence.  It was really neat to see all the places that were mentioned in the Bible. There are a lot of pictures and video of the Holy Land, which really kept my attention.  In his first trip to Egypt, he could not find any evidence of The Exodus. He then went back a second time and spoke with different people who are also researching the same thing, some of which say there is evidence and some who say there isn't. He realized he needed a new approach to finding the evidence he was searching for. He spoke with Bible Scholars, experts, archaeologists, and many other people. This was a wonderful look into the facts and history of the Bible. This documentary is well done, very informative, and gives great detail as to their findings. A bonus feature DVD is also included that has features such as meeting the cast, behind the music, and more. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who would like to learn more about the story of Exodus, or even to someone who doesn't necessarily believe that what the Bible says is true.

About the author/filmmaker/producer:
Tim Mahoney founded Mahoney Media Group, Inc. (MMG) in 1989. MMG focused its business on television and video production for regional and national companies. In 2014 Tim founded Thinking Man Films & Media as an international documentary & publishing company with a focus on education and the Bible. Tim produced numerous productions for Christian organizations including the Billy Graham Association, World Wide Pictures, and Compassion International. Tim also served as the President of the board for the International Christian Visual Media Association (ICVM). Tim’s first full feature documentary film, “PATTERNS OF EVIDENCE: THE EXODUS”, released in January 2015. The film took 12 years to develop and takes a scientific approach to investigate the events of the biblical Exodus. The overall vision for his film company is to explore “patterns of evidence” that support the biblical narrative and engages the world in a conversation. The film takes a balanced approach and leaves the audience to decide for themselves if the Bible is real history or myth.
About the film:
·         Won 13 awards on the film festival circuit in 2014, including a Gold Remi Award winner for Best Director at the Worldfest Houston Intl. Film Festival, the Gold Crown Award for Best Picture and Best Documentary at ICVM 2014, and Official Selection at the Soho International Film Festival in New York.
·         Supplemental resources associated with the film include a nearly 400-page hardcover book, small group Bible study, Movie Event kit, youth version (called Young Explorers), homeschool curriculum and others.
·         It includes powerful interviews with some of the top experts in the fields of archaeology and Egyptology as well as people of influence in the Middle East.
·         The film has an objective, fair-minded and balanced approach. It allows viewpoints from all sides to be heard in a respectful way while asking honest questions of the Bible and scholars’ views. It does not preach and lets the evidence speak for itself. This allows the film to be very shareable with those of different viewpoints.
